Q   I keep hearing lots of advertisements for laser. Is this the same as IPL?

NO! Laser is a different technology from which IPL was developed. IPL technology, which has been used safely in hospitals for nearly 30 years, has been commercialised for use in salons and clinics. The main difference is that Laser uses a narrow red beam of red light which burns the surface layers of the skin (even with anaesthetic blockers it is still painful plus there are risks of burning) and IPL uses a white beam of light to heat under the surface layers of the skin; hence it is relatively pain-free and safer.

Q   Why should I choose IPL over laser?

At Lady At Bay we prefer using the very latest, quality medically-approved, IPL technology, which is safer and more comfortable for clients than laser plus it delivers amazingly powerful and effective results (less time than with older IPL or Laser technologies, for instance we can usually HALVE the number of treatments you'd need elsewhere). Plus IPL is safer than Laser, because the light penetrates the surface of the skin, so there’s no risk of bruising or burning, although sometimes a light crusting will be apparent, which is perfectly normal and suggests a good result. There is NO pain (clients with a low pain threshold may feel a momentary sting and it may be uncomfortable, but it quickly passes and requires no anaesthesia or pain blockers), it's quick and simple, and best of all… NO downtime. Our operators are qualified with many years of experience, so you don't need to risk going elsewhere.

IPL parameters ensure safe and effective operation. In fact, IPL technology has been safely used for over 30 years and ongoing clinical trials conducted by leading authorities on pulsed light continue to document its safety and effectiveness.

Q   What are the benefits of IPL Treatments?

It's suitable for most skin types. IPL can remove pigmentation (sun spots), freckles, broken capillaries, Rosacea, eradicate acne, remove acne scarring and significantly reduce acne pitting. It can also reduce open pores, even out skin tone, brighten the complexion and minimise flushing. IPL increases collagen and elastin production, thereby significantly diminishing wrinkles and fine lines.

Q   How does an IPL Facial Treatment work?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is applied over your skin and a series of flashes (pulses) are emitted at regular short intervals. The light penetrates the epidermal layers of the skin and is absorbed by the dermis. The heat impairs the vessel or lesion and the body begins a natural healing process by increasing fibroblastic activity, which is responsible for producing collagen in the skin, and a correct layer organization is induced.

As you age, fibroblastic levels decrease, showing more signs of ageing. By increasing fibroblastic activity lines will be softened, the skin will be more hydrated, the blood supply is stimulated and oxygen flow to the tissues is increased resulting in a wonderful youthful glow.

IPL also increases protein synthesis. Muscles are largely made up of protein, so by stimulating and increasing synthesis they become more lifted, plumped and rejuvenated and the skin appears more refined with softened lines and wrinkles.

Many clients report amazing results after just two sessions.

With our powerful cutting edge technologies, at normal levels, most male clients will require an average of 2 to 4 treatments and most women will need between 4 to 8 treatments… significantly LESS than with most other types of IPL or Laser.

For some clients, a more aggressive treatment is possible, which delivers even faster results. Ongoing maintenance may be necessary to maintain your results, however that will depend upon lifestyle. The more effective you are at protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun, the less need you will have for IPL facial treatments in the future.

While times may vary, optimal results typically peak within eight to twelve weeks.

Q   How much will a treatment cost me?

Because at Lady At Bay we use a more powerful (but perfectly safe) technology, you will require less treatments than you would if you went elsewhere, so you save money. Plus, in many cases, your IPL hair removal treatments will cost the same price as waxing. On average, males will need about 2 to 4 treatments and females will need about 4 to 8 treatments. And just think - over a lifetime of waxing, the average woman will spend as much as it costs to buy a small car! IPL is also cheaper than home waxing, too. Remember, you do this once and your hair is gone forever. You are GUARANTEED to save time and money. With photo-rejuvenation the number depends upon the severity of the problem and can be more accurately diagnosed during the initial consultation but the average is between 6 to 12 treatments.

Q   My dermatologist/doctor says not to have this done, so why should I trust Lady At Bay?

We have performed well over half a million successful and incident-free procedures.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a specific technology that only specially trained practitioners are qualified to use. Each of our IPL practitioners is highly trained and qualified with tens of thousands of hours and many years’ experience in IPL procedures. This experience and advanced knowledge is greater than that of those dermatologists and doctors who don’t work with this modality. Nearly 100% of clients will find IPL therapy to be successful, comfortable and problem free.

Q   How long does it take and how many treatments will I need?

IPL is quick and painless (if you have a low tolerance to pain, you will feel a sting as the pulse hits your skin and you may flinch - this is a normal reflex action). Each hair removal session takes about the same time as waxing, with the exception of some of the larger areas such as the back and legs. Most male clients will usually only need 4 treatments and most female clients will need between 8-12 treatments. Small areas of IPL photo-rejuvenation take only minutes and a full face, neck & décolletage non-surgical face-lift takes less than ½ an hour.

Q   My friend told me it doesn’t work, so why should I risk spending money on IPL?

In the majority of cases, IPL therapy is highly successful and the preferred, pain-free alternative for permanent hair reduction, photo-rejuvenation and non-surgical face-lifts. In a very small minority (less than 1%) of cases hormonal activity can make hair reduction difficult. In these circumstances, we suggest a waiting period before resuming treatment. However, IPL is not effective if you have white, grey or very blonde hair; instead we recommend other more suitable alternatives.

Q   I’ve heard about people being burned with this treatment. Is this true?

In the hands of inexperienced practitioners, YES... it is a definite possibility and we’ve heard of a few cases, too. However, most people confuse IPL with laser. In most of the documented cases, it has been the laser treatments that have caused burns and sometimes scarring. In the hands of our qualified IPL practitioners and using our state of the art technology, as long as you follow your home-care instructions meticulously, it’s impossible to burn or scar. In rare instances you may experience redness and a mild sunburn sensation afterwards, but this is normal and will subside within 24 hours.

Q   Is there anything I need to be careful of; any side effects?

There are no side effects and any contra-indications will be determined prior to your treatment in your initial consultation. However, there are some precautions you must take after your treatments. You will need to use a specialised post-care lotion as well as the best quality sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 (your therapist will advise you on the best products to use) plus for a brief period after treatment, you will need to stay out of the sun. After a treatment, it is possible your skin may appear flushed, hyper-brown pigmented or dirty-looking, spots may appear darker and capillaries may be more visible. This is perfectly normal and occurs because the abnormal pigment starts to appear on the surface of the skin. This will naturally exfoliate after about 3 to 7 days.

Q   I feel really nervous about having this treatment. Does it hurt?

It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous on your first treatment… just about everyone does. However, after you’ve had your first IPL treatment, as with all our clients, you’ll say, “Oh, that wasn’t bad at all.” If you’ve ever had waxing, you’ll actually feel relief when you experience your first IPL treatment because it's far more comfortable. You may experience a mild stinging sensation for a fraction of a second whilst the heat of the pulsed light is on your skin, but in most instances, clients tell us that it is mildly uncomfortable. IPL does not require anaesthesia or pain blockers

There is no lasting discomfort and most clients tolerate IPL treatments well. You will experience a mild sting when the light contacts your skin, but a special cooled head is used to create surface numbing, which keeps the procedure as pain free as possible.

While you comfortably relax on a treatment bed with protective eye goggles, your therapist will apply a cool, clear gel onto the treatment area and a smooth crystal is gently placed in contact with the gel. A flash of light lasting a few milliseconds is delivered to the treatment site. This process is repeated with an overlapping until the entire area has been treated.

Q   How long before I see results?

Hair removal: You should see hair start to fall out within about 2 weeks. However, everyone is different and you may have to wait until after your second visit. Men will experience significantly better results as their hair is thicker.

Photo-rejuvenation: Many clients, especially those with open pores, will see an instant improvement. However, most clients will start to see visible improvements after their second or third visit.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is non-invasive, 100% safe, effective and affordable. Pulsed light stimulates the production of new collagen promoting cell regeneration and therefore skin smoothing.
